Rise of the Incas
The Incas grew into an empire that archeologists suggest took about 200 years to develop. There were probably three or four things that the Incas did simultaneously. One of the very important things was that they worked very hard in diplomacy, they negotiated relationships with their neighbors or just with people who were targets for incorporation into their expanding territory. They tried to work out friendly relationships through gift exchanges, marital exchanges, or political alliances. Failing this, they would threaten those people with military conquest. So there was a combination of diplomacy and inducement, coercion, and militarism all wrapped up into one strategic package. All three of these things helped the Incas develop into a strong community of people.
